Since 2012, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office – BPTO has been running a pilot program for acceleration of examination of Brazilian patent applications covering environmentally friendly technologies of alternative energy, transportation, energy conservation, waste management and agriculture, based on the WIPO’s IPC Green Inventory.

Due to the excellent results achieved by the pilot program, with an average waiting time of two years for examination of qualified applications, the fast-track examination of “green” patent applications became a permanent service of the BPTO on December 6, 2016.

The main goal of the “Green Patent” priority program, directly addressing global environmental challenges, is to encourage innovation in the green technology sector by enabling the identification of new technologies and accelerating their sustainable development and licensing.
